D.O.T. QUALIFIED?

Are the casual or lease drivers you are presently using, qualified to work for you under the rules of the Department of Transportation, and in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations? If you're not sure, the following is a guideline to help you evaluate the drivers you are using. Keep in mind, as the motor carrier, you bear the responsibility to ensure that all drivers are in compliance.






Drug Testing:

Under Federal Regulations a CDL driver must be more that just tested.
  • A driver must be enrolled in a DOT certified drug awareness training program.
  • Be familiar with when and why they are required to test and what the ramifications are if they fail to test.
  • A driver must be enrolled in a program that randomly checks 50% of the drivers annually utilizing a NIDA certified laboratory.

Requirements of Motor Carrier when using a casual or intermittent driver:


  • Copy of Medical Certificate.
  • Driver’s Name & Social Security Number.
  • Driver’s Motor Vehicle License Number, Type, and Issuing State.

What you are NOT required to have using a casual or intermittent driver:

  • An Application for Employment.
  • Investigations and Inquires into that person’s background.
  • Perform Annual Review of Driving Record.
  • Require the Driver to provide a record of violations or an annual certification.
